Vervit from Belgium is a global player in the field of tissue culture and wanted to equip its new location with a fully automated and integrated vertical farm. Green Simplicity designed and realized this complete system: from cultivation system to irrigation, climate and automation – all completely tailored to the needs of the plant.

Innovative vertical farm for microgreens and tissue culture

Vervit is een veelzijdig en innovatief bedrijf dat internationale bekendheid geniet op het gebied van weefselkweek. Naast de productie van jongplanten uit weefselkweek levert het ook onderzoeksdiensten én ontwikkelt het bioreactoren onder de naam SETIS™ en produceren microgreens onder de naam PachaGreens™. Om deze uiteenlopende activiteiten optimaal te faciliteren, wilden zij een grootschalige en volautomatische vertical farm die geheel ingericht zou zijn op maximale plantkwaliteit en efficiëntie.

Our solution:

Green Simplicity realized a complete vertical farm 1,029 m2 of growing surface with a fully automatic multi-layer cultivation setup in the new facility in Lochristi (Belgium). The system has four layers; each layer consists of two container lanes, separated by a walkway for inspection. The entire setup is adapted to the trellis size of 9.6 metres in order to make maximum use of the space. The system was delivered turnkey, including internal transport, climate control, LED lighting, irrigation and automation.

Multiple microclimates in one cultivation system

Two layers of the cultivation setup are set up for the production of microgreens and equipped with ebb-flow irrigation. The other two layers are used for hardening and rooting the tissue culture material. These layers are equipped with spraybooms. This makes it possible to realize multiple microclimates within one cultivation system, tailored to the plant level. The integrated AHU (air handling unit) regulates the air displacement, dehumidification and temperature with cooling technology. The air speed and the blowing pattern are also adjusted to the needs of the crop.

Efficient production and fully integrated cultivation system

With this vertical farm, Vervit has a complete and integrated cultivation system for the controlled production of microgreens and tissue culture plants. The different layers and irrigation systems make it possible to respond to the specific needs of the crop per layer while only one LBK is used. Thanks to the integration of climate, LED lighting, irrigation and software, production is very efficient. The collaboration within GreenV, including that between Green Simplicity and HT Verboom, has ensured a well-coordinated solution within this vertical farm.
