Kunis Flower & Bulbs is a tulip nursery where they turn challenges into opportunities. Due to grid congestion, a new hall could not be used as a cooling room. Together with Green Simplicity, John Kunis turned it into an energy-efficient indoor tulip nursery, with full control over climate and light.
10 million tulips per year, fully controlled
Tulip grower Kunis in Obdam grows around 10 million tulips annually, from January to mid-April. To store these tulip bulbs, John Kunis built a fully insulated, closed hall of 1,000 m2 with a folding roof system of sandwich panels in 2020, intended for four cold stores. However, the power grid did not offer enough capacity to use these cells. Kunis therefore opted for innovation and wanted to set up the hall as an energy-efficient indoor nursery.
Our solution:
To convert the hall into a fully enclosed space, Green Simplicity supplied a combination of the Dry+ Climate system and an LED installation with Growlight. The Dry+ system ensures constant control over temperature, dehumidification and heating. This system is fully electric and therefore fossil-free. The Growlight installation makes it possible to apply the right light spectrum per growth phase. In this way, every tulip in this greenhouse gets exactly what it needs at all times for optimal growth.
"We can create an ideal environment for the flowers. Due to the tight climate we do not suffer from leaf sweat or tipping in the tulips."
Stable growing conditions for vulnerable tulip cultivars
Stability in light and climate is crucial when growing exclusive and vulnerable tulip varieties. And thanks to the precise control of both systems, that is no problem in this closed cell. The completely closed hall also prevents energy loss and makes gas consumption unnecessary. "You don't have to use gas to heat the hall dry," says Kunis.
Fossil-free breeding with maximum quality
By fully electrically controlling both systems, the Dry+ Climate and Growlight, this nursery runs without gas. This results in considerable energy savings, especially in the winter. And the tulips they grow in this energy-efficient and stable environment are of consistently high quality, with fewer losses and without sweaters or tippers.
